Middle Level Education

Former middle school teacher. 1998 Maine Middle Level Educator of the Year Award recipient. Worked Maine's prestigious Middle Level Education Institute for almost 10 years. Regular presenter at state & national middle level conferences. Key designer of the University of Maine at Farmington's Middle Level Education Program. Designed the Middle Level Education course at UMF. Taught graduate courses in Middle Level Education. Member of the Board of Directors of the Maine Association for Middle Level Education (MAMLE). Designed & implemented MAMLE's web site (www.mamleonline.org). Wrote articles on middle level topics, including the academic orientation of middle schools, and curriculum integration. Conducted extensive inservice on a wide variety of middle level concepts; everything from curriculum integration, to teaming, to developmental characteristics of young adolescents.

Meaningful Engaged Learning

Director of the Maine Center for Meaningful Engaged Learning (www.mcmel.org). Conducted research into what underachieving middle school students believe motivates them to learn. Developed a Meaningful Engaged Learning model. Wrote several articles about motivating and engaging teaching and learning (more in press). Conducted extensive inservice on Meaningful Engaged Learning including the following: Motivating Underachieving Students, Planning Lessons for Active Learning, Project and Problem Based Learning, the Multiple Intelligences Game, Making Math Units Engaging Through Real World Context, Making Social Studies Units Engaging Through Project Based Learning, Planning Integrated Curriculum with Students, Meaningful Assessment Strategies, the Foxfire Approach to Teaching and Learning.

Educational Technology

15 years of experience integrating technology into the curriculum and working with teachers to do the same. Wrote numerous articles and 3 books about educational technology. Co-wrote 2 curriculum guides for computer-based educational products from LEGO. Designed the Educational Technology course for Middle/Secondary majors at the University of Maine at Farmington. Has integrated technology extensively throughout his non-technology University courses. Taught graduate courses, worked numerous technology institutes, presented at numerous state and national conferences, and conducted inservice on integrating technology into the curriculum. Inservice conducted includes, Creating Web Pages, Introduction to HyperStudio, Project-Based Learning with Technology, Assessing Technology Projects, Integrating the Internet into the Curriculum, Keeping Students Safe on the Internet.
